Screen-used Andiron

Original screen-used figural lion andiron from the 1939 Civil War epic, sold together with an original period production still (SIP-108-P229; 10 x 8 inches) depicting Clark Gable seated by the fireplace with this andiron clearly visible. The lower portion of the andiron as shown in the image has been separated from the section on offer here and is no longer extant, but the very heavy piece is in otherwise fine condition with moderate wear and some rust from age and use. An uncommon item from an important part of film history. Together with an A1 reproduction poster for the classic film, one in a series of five posters included with The Times newspaper as part of a 2006 promotion with Turner Classic Movies.  Original folding creases, else in fine condition.  23.25 x 33.25 inches (59.4 x 84.1 cm.). A most unusual portrait photograph by Scotty Welbourne of the actress and singer in front of an unsettling surreal backdrop prominently featuring a disembodied human eye.  Newspaper clipping mounted to verso reads "It Is Doubtful If Ida Lupino, the Movie Star, Can Explain Why a Hollywood Cameraman Took Her Picture Against a Surrealistic Backdrop Made Up of Converging Lines and a Disembodied Over-sized Human Eye."  There are several stamps to verso, including the date May 30, 1943, and stamps from Acme Newspapers and The American Weekly.  Areas of overpainting, staple marks to corner margins, light rippling to upper edge, else in fine condition.  7 x 9 inches (17.8 x 22.9 cm.).  Read More...

Collection of five original black and white photographs of the American hard-bop pianist.  Two larger prints, one of them in oblong format (8.75 x 13.25 inches / 22 x 33.3 cm) showing him seated in a chair, the other one, in upright format (13 x 8.5 inches / 33 x 21.2 cm) in a close-up at the piano, face and torso only (no hands).  Three smaller prints, two of them upright (10 x 8 inches / 25.5 x 20.3 cm), showing him seated at the piano, the third, in oblong format (8 x 10 inches / 20.3 x 25 cm) seated on the ground with a miniature piano.  The three smaller photos are in fine condition except for a crease to the upper left corner of the oblong one.  The two larger photos have a few minor cracks, and the oblong one is slightly stained along the left edge. Rare original rehearsal photograph of the important choreographer, shown with her leg raised high while in discussion with an Elia Kazan. They worked together on Weill's One Touch of Venus in 1943 and the newspapers displayed in the photo refer to wartime, so it's likely it was taken around this time. An uncommon AMQS from the American avant-garde composer, pianist, author, and inventor who co-patented a 'Secret Communications System' with actress Hedy Lamarr in 1941. AMQS on an off-white card imprinted "Collection of Bernard J. Klug." Antheil pens two bars from one of his works, signing below in bold ink, "October 29, 1954, George Antheil."
